    Camp Hope

    WEST RIVER CENTER - JULY 5 - 9, 2010

CAMP HOPE  is designed to give children who have one or both parents incarcerated a break:

    • ... from cycles where children of incarcerated parents are seven times more likely to become negatively involved with the criminal justice system.  About 70% of children of those who have been incarcerated are adjudicated themselves at sometime in their lives.

    • ... break from environments that often include poverty, crime, substance abuse, anger, violence, child abuse and neglect.

    • ... from living in areas with limited opportunities for wholesome fun and transformational relationship-building in a natural outdoor environment.

    • ... from trying to manage life in chaotic, adult situations in favor of the opportunity and unwind and be kids!

    • ... from the painful and stultifying absence of positive, mentoring relationships, opportunities for spiritual renewal and growth, the very thing their parents suffer from most.

The camp setting offers an intense longer term opportunity to be exposed to caring counselors who model good choices, an opportunity for a genuine encounter with God on their terms, and a chance to practice and demonstrate healthy coping skills, conflict resolution, a fulfilling sense of community and good social skills. This experience when coupled with follow up in positive mentoring programs and/or a loving faith community has the potential to make a difference in the life of a young person, hence breaking this otherwise destructive cycle.

CAMP HOPE is a ministry partnership between Onesimus Human Resource Development, Inc, Retreat and Camping Ministries of the Baltimore-Washington

Conference of the United Methodist Church, the Board of Child Care, and the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, to provide children who have an incarcerated parent  a week of summer camp. Children entering

the 4th thru 9th grades in the fall of 2009 are eligible. Children from anywhere in Maryland and Washington, DC are eligible to attend.  The generosity of the partners and private individuals makes this experience free for the participating campers.

CAMP HOPE is held at the West River Center, a Christian summer camp and retreat center located 15 miles south of Annapolis that is owned and operated by the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church. It features 45 acres on nearly one mile of waterfront of the West River. It is fully licensed by the State of Maryland.  The camp includes daily activities such as swimming, games, archery, tubing, a climbing wall, boating, nature study, Bible study, worship, singing, high ropes and loads of fun!

    2010 Logistics

CAMP HOPE will have 96 campers this year, 48 boys and 48 girls and will fill on a first come, first served basis. It begins on Monday morning (after July 4th), July 5. Registration is from 10:00 to 11:30 am, and will end after dinner on Friday, July 9, at 6:00 pm. To apply, the camper's parent or guardian should fill out the application and return it to the address listed on the form. The person referring this child to camp needs to list their name, relationship and contact phone number/email. We will be contacting that person for verification

and additional information. The referring partner is generally someone who is familiar with the family and child situation that may be able to assist with information. This could be a pastor, local church leader, school guidance counselor, community official or other person in a similar capacity.  After the application has been received and accepted, an information packet will be sent to the parent/guardian at the address shown on the application. An email or phone call will be sent to the referring partner. This will include a list of what to bring (and not bring!), directions to camp, time of registration and pick up and other helpful information. This will also include a health form that must be

completed and brought to camp with the camper Sunday afternoon. Perhaps the most difficult part of this form is to include the shot record of the camper. This can generally be obtained from the child's doctor or from the local school. A physician does not need to sign the Health form unless the camper

will be taking medication while at camp.

CAMP HOPE is free to the camper.  Campers will bring their personal belongings, toiletries and a sleeping bag or sheets and a blanket. (This is spelled out in detail in the information packet sent after the registration is accepted.) Transportation will be provided if necessary. There is a camp store for the camper to purchase and afternoon snack or souvenirs, one t-shirt per camper and $10 will be provided for this purpose. Any additional funds must be brought by the camper.  If any of this hinders the child from attending camp, please contact either Andy or Amy in the Office of Retreat and Camping ministries at 800-922-6795 or westriver.center@verizon.net. We will work with our partners and local churches to help overcome these obstacles.

Please Rev. Timothy B. Warner at 240-328-8422 with questions.
